Microsoft 365: Reset your password

If you have forgotten the password for your Microsoft 365 account, you reset it directly with Microsoft. This applies to regular users as well as to the administrator account, for example admin@musterdomain.onmicrosoft.com.

How to reset the password

• Open https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com.
• Enter your full user name, for example max@musterdomain.ch or admin@musterdomain.onmicrosoft.com, and the characters shown.
• Microsoft now asks for the verification methods stored in your account, for example a code by text message, a call or a code sent to another email address. For the administrator account, Microsoft usually requires two of them.
• Once verified, you set a new password.

Things to watch out for

• Only stored details work. Microsoft only accepts the phone number and email address saved in the account. Do not try out different numbers.
• Text messages only go to mobile numbers. If a landline number is stored, choose the option «Call».
• After several failed attempts, Microsoft temporarily blocks the reset. In that case, wait instead of trying again.
• If your email is currently not working, a code sent to that address will not arrive either. Choose a different verification method.

You manage your Microsoft account yourself, which is why we cannot reset the password for you. A regular user can also contact their company’s administrator, who can set a new password in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
