Add cloud storage as a network drive

Our cloud storage can easily be added as a network drive under Windows.

Variant 1 without software

1. Open the Windows File Explorer.
2. Right-click on “This PC” and select “Connect network drive…”.
   
3. Enter the following URL as the folder: . Activate the two checkboxes and select a suitable drive letter.

   

4. If all the data has been entered correctly, a login window should now open in which you can enter your user name and password.
   
5. Activate “Save login data” and click on “OK”. The network drive has been successfully set up and should now open in a new window.

Variant 2 with software

1. Download and install RaiDrive from here
   Click on add (1)
   Select NAS (2)
   Select WebDAV (3)
2. Now select the desired drive letter and enter a drive name e.g. “Webdav” (4)
   Enter the cloud storage name cloud.firestorm.ch in (5)
   In (6) enter the path remote.php/webdav/.
   Now enter your user name and password in (7).
3. Click OK and find the new drive on your computer and access it like a local hard drive.

Error handling

If you receive the error “the network connection could not be found” when connecting the network drive, open the command line on your computer and execute the following command:

REG ADD HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesWebClientParameters /v BasicAuthLevel /t REG_DWORD /d 2 /f

Network drive is connected, but files cannot be uploaded

If the network drive connects successfully and folders as well as existing files are displayed, but uploading new files does not work or simply nothing happens, this is caused by the network drive client built into Windows itself. By default it limits the size of individual files when uploading to around 50 MB and often behaves unreliably with larger files or several files at once, regardless of how much free storage space is still available in the cloud storage.

To increase this limit, open the command line on your computer as administrator and run the following command:

REG ADD HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesWebClientParameters /v FileSizeLimitInBytes /t REG_DWORD /d 4294967295 /f

Then restart the “WebClient” service or restart your computer for the change to take effect.

For larger amounts of data, or if problems persist, we recommend using the RaiDrive software described in variant 2 instead of the Windows network drive. It is significantly more reliable when uploading large or numerous files.

Folders cannot be created or files cannot be saved although there is enough free space

This is also usually caused by the network drive client built into Windows: for some operations it behaves like a read-only drive and cancels write operations without an error message. In addition, it often has problems with files and folders that contain umlauts or special characters in their names. First check whether the problem also occurs with a name without umlauts or special characters. For reliable creating, renaming and saving, we recommend the Nextcloud desktop app or access directly in the browser at cloud.firestorm.ch instead of the Windows network drive.
