Activate SSL certificate

Automatic free certificate

You can create an unlimited number of SSL certificates for each hosting package. The certificates are automatically created by us as soon as your domain is actively running through us, so you don’t have to do anything!

«Not secure» warning on a new domain?

If you have just activated a domain or moved it to us, a certificate warning may appear for a short time. In most cases this is not an error and resolves itself:

  • The certificate is being created: We issue the certificate automatically as soon as the domain is active with us. Depending on the timing, this can take a few minutes to a few hours.
  • The name servers have just been changed: If you changed the name servers at your previous provider to our servers, it takes a while until this change is known throughout the internet. For .ch domains this is usually quick, for .com and other international domains it can take up to 48 hours. During this time some browsers still end up at your previous host, where no matching certificate exists. That is why the warning looks different depending on the device and internet connection.
  • The website redirects to http://: If the .htaccess file (or the configuration of your CMS) contains a redirect to an address starting with http://, the browser shows «not secure» despite a valid certificate. Replace http:// with https:// in that redirect.

What you can do: Reload the page or clear the browser cache. If the warning still appears 48 hours after the change, contact us via a ticket.

By the way: the certificates are not only created automatically but also renewed automatically on an ongoing basis. You can find them in Plesk under «SSL/TLS Certificates». There you can also upload your own certificate if needed, see below.

Creating a manual certificate

If you still prefer to create a certificate manually, proceed as follows:

Make sure that your domain runs over our servers. Open the web administration and log in at admin.firestorm.ch. Then open your service package and click on Plesk Login and then open the button ‘SSL/TLS Certificates’.

Now select Use for free (1) if you want to use the free Let’s Encrypt certificate or select Upload (2) if you want to upload your own certificate. Of course you can also order a paid SSL certificate on our website at https://www.firestorm.ch/ssl-zertifikate/.

Now select the 3 checkboxes as shown in the picture below and click on ‘Use for free’. Your free SSL certificate will be installed and activated and is ready to use immediately.

Certificate for Subdomains

Choose the Subdomain and click the button ‘SSL/TLS Certificate’.

Now click on the install button under “Install a free basic certificate provided by Let’s Encrypt”.

At last, choose the Box name “Secure the domain name” and press “Get it free” and have a moment of patience, while the certificate gets installed for the subdomain. After the installation is completed, the free SSL-certificate is ready for use.
