Domain lock

A lock protects your domain from being transferred to another provider or changed without your knowledge. Which lock is available depends on the domain extension. You will find it in the customer area right next to the domain.

Where to find the feature

  • Log in to the customer area
  • Open the domain under «Domain»
  • Click the «Transfer lock» or «Registry Lock» tile

Transfer lock (.com, .net, .org and more)

For generic extensions such as .com, .net, .org, .info or .shop, the transfer lock is free of charge and active by default. While it is active, the domain cannot be transferred to another provider.

  • If you want to transfer the domain, click «Remove lock» in the tile.
  • If the domain is not transferred within 30 days, the lock is activated again automatically.
  • With «Activate lock» you can switch it back on immediately at any time.

Country extensions such as .de, .at, .eu, .fr or .it have no transfer lock. There, the auth code protects your domain: without it, no transfer is possible.

Registry Lock (.ch and .li)

.ch and .li domains can also only be transferred with the auth code, which only you can request in the customer area. Registry Lock adds extra protection: the Switch registry locks the domain directly. While it is active, nobody can transfer or delete the domain or change the owner, name servers or other registration data, not even with your login. You can keep editing your DNS records as usual.

  • Setup: CHF 45.00
  • Annual fee: CHF 12.00
  • Removing the lock: CHF 45.00

How it works:

  • Confirm the order in the «Registry Lock» tile. You will receive an invoice for the setup and the first year.
  • Once it is paid, we set up the Registry Lock at Switch. You can see the status in the tile at any time.
  • If you want to change name servers or owner data, cancel or transfer the domain, remove the lock in the same tile. Once it is paid, we remove the lock and the annual fee no longer applies.

Protect your customer account too

A lock is most effective when your customer account is well protected as well. Set up two-factor authentication for this.
