Own Nameserver

If your domain uses its own nameservers within its own zone (for example ns1.musterdomain.ch), those nameservers need what’s called a glue record: an IP address stored directly with the registry. With the “Own Nameserver” tool you can now manage these glue records yourself, without contacting support.

What is a glue record?

A nameserver such as ns1.musterdomain.ch sits inside its own domain. A resolver can’t look up its IP address the normal way through DNS, because doing so would already require the nameserver, a chicken-and-egg problem. That’s why the registry (for .ch/.li that’s SWITCH) stores the IP address directly with the nameserver record itself, that’s the glue record. Nameservers outside your own domain (for example ns1.someprovider.ch) don’t need a glue record and therefore don’t appear in this tool.

How to manage your own nameservers

• Log in to your hosting management (client area)
• Under Domains, open the affected domain
• Click the “Own Nameserver” tile
• Any existing own nameservers are shown with their current IP address

Changing an IP address

Simply overwrite the IP address in the field and click Save. Enter multiple IP addresses (for example IPv4 and IPv6 at the same time) separated by a comma, e.g. 195.65.29.207, 2a02:1234:5678::1.

Adding a new own nameserver

In the “Register Nameserver” form, enter the desired name (for example ns3) and the IP address, then click Save.

Deleting a nameserver

Click Delete next to the relevant entry in the list. The deletion takes effect immediately.

Good to know

• Available for domains with the .ch and .li extensions
• A nameserver can be used by several domains at once. Changing its IP address affects all domains that use it
• The change is active at the registry within a few minutes. Depending on caching, it may take longer to show up everywhere on the internet (for example with third-party whois services)
• Caution: an incorrectly entered IP address can make your domain (website, email) unreachable. Please double-check carefully

Who can use this?

All .ch and .li domains registered with FireStorm. This function isn’t available yet for other domain extensions, please contact our support in that case.
