Change reverse DNS (PTR) for your server

The reverse DNS record (PTR record) assigns a name to your server’s IP address, for example server.musterdomain.ch. Many mail servers check this record before accepting an email. If you run a mail server, the reverse DNS should therefore always be set correctly.

Change reverse DNS in the vServerPanel

1. Log in to the vServerPanel and open your server.
2. On the «Overview» tab you will find the «Network» card. It shows the IP address, the IPv6 address and the current reverse DNS records.
3. Click «Change reverse DNS», enter the name you want and click «Save».

The name applies to IPv4 and IPv6 together. The change is visible worldwide within a few minutes.

Root servers in the customer area

For a root server, you change the reverse DNS in the customer area. Open your root server there. The table with the IP addresses shows the current record in the «PTR Record» column. Use the pencil next to it to change it for each IP address individually.

Things to keep in mind

• Enter a fully qualified name, for example server.musterdomain.ch, not just server.
• The name should point to the same IP address via an A record (IPv4) or AAAA record (IPv6). Only then do mail servers consider the record valid.
• For a mail server, ideally use the same name the server uses when sending (HELO).
