Sell your domain: how to put a domain up for sale

With “Sell this domain” you put a domain you no longer need up for sale straight from the customer area. In one step we set up a sale page, switch the DNS records and forward every offer to you. The feature is free, there is no commission and no listing fee.

How the sale works

  • Sale page: anyone who visits your domain sees a simple page with your asking price and can make you an offer directly.
  • Dashboard: every offer arrives by email and shows up in your private dashboard on domainsale.firestorm.ch. That is where you accept or decline.
  • Transfer: buyer and seller arrange payment and the transfer directly with each other. We do not hold any funds.

Where to find it

  • Log in to the customer area
  • Under “Domain”, open the domain you want to sell
  • Click the “Sell this domain” tile

You will also find the entry in the domain list: click the tool icon on the right, the entry sits between “Extend domain” and “Cancel Domain”.

Domain management with the Sell this domain tile

Step 1: details of the domain

Your name and email address are filled in from your customer account. We send the link to your dashboard and every new offer to this address. You can change it if offers should go somewhere else.

  • Asking price: the price shown on the sale page. Leave it empty and the page says “Open to offers”.
  • Minimum offer: offers below this amount are not accepted at all. Buyers can see the minimum.
  • Headline and description: one sentence that sells the domain, plus a few details such as the age of the domain or what it was used for. Both appear on the sale page.

Step 2: confirm the DNS switch

For the sale page to appear, we switch the A and AAAA records for your domain and www to our sales server. This has two consequences, which the red notice points out explicitly:

  • A website running on this domain today will no longer be reachable afterwards. If a hosting package belongs to the domain, its name is shown in the notice.
  • Email records (MX) and all other records stay as they are. Your mailboxes keep working.

Tick “I understand that the DNS records will be overwritten” and click “Create sale page and switch DNS”.

Step 3: done

You immediately see the state of your listing: status, pending offers and the result of the DNS switch. “Open dashboard” takes you to your private dashboard, “View sale page” shows your domain the way buyers see it. You also get the dashboard link by email. Keep it safe: anyone who knows the link can accept or decline offers in your name.

It can take a few minutes until the sale page is reachable everywhere. We set up the https certificate automatically.

What buyers see

The sale page shows your headline, asking price and description. A buyer makes an offer through the form, optionally with a message to you. Their email address stays hidden from you until you accept the offer.

Accepting or declining offers

The dashboard lists every offer with amount, message and status. For each pending offer you can click “Accept” or “Decline”. Either way we let the buyer know.

When you accept an offer, the domain counts as sold: all other pending offers are closed automatically, and both sides receive each other’s contact details for payment and the transfer. In the dashboard you can also change the asking price, headline and description at any time, or take the listing off the market.

After the sale: transferring the domain

  • Agree on the payment with the buyer. Transfer the domain only once the money has arrived.
  • You receive the auth code for the transfer as soon as you cancel the domain in the customer area. So cancel it only after payment.
  • Pass the auth code on to the buyer. They use it to start the transfer to their provider.

Good to know

  • The feature is available for every active domain in your customer account.
  • If you decide not to sell after all, take the listing off the market in the dashboard with “Withdraw listing”. Pending offers are closed and the buyers are informed. You can make the listing live again at any time.
  • We do not switch the DNS records back automatically. If you want to use the domain for a website again, set the records in the DNS manager or open a ticket.
  • Offers are non-binding expressions of interest. A purchase agreement only comes about between you and the buyer.

Frequently asked questions

  • I cannot see the “Sell this domain” tile. It only appears for active domains. A cancelled or expired domain cannot be put up for sale.
  • I lost the link to my dashboard. Open the domain in the customer area and click “Sell this domain” again, you will find the “Open dashboard” button there. Alternatively, request a new email under “Lost your link?” on domainsale.firestorm.ch.
  • Can I sell a domain that is not registered with FireStorm? Yes, directly on domainsale.firestorm.ch. In that case you set the DNS records yourself at your provider, the instructions arrive by email.
  • What does it cost? Nothing. There are no listing fees and no commission on the sale price.
  • Do you handle the payment? No. Buyer and seller arrange payment and the transfer directly with each other. We are not an escrow service.
