Backup Manager: restore your data yourself

The Backup Manager lets you restore an earlier state of your website, your databases or your mailboxes yourself, directly in the client area and without a ticket. We back up the data of your hosting package every night and keep up to 60 daily backups. The Backup Manager is part of every hosting package, at no extra cost.

What you can restore

  • Website and files: all files of your website, including images and templates
  • Databases: this is where the texts, orders and settings of your website live
  • Mailboxes: the e-mails of individual mailboxes

You can select several items at once, for example website and database together. For most websites the two belong together, such as WordPress, Joomla or a shop. If you restore only one of them, the site may not work properly afterwards.

Where to find the Backup Manager

  • Log in to the client area
  • Open your hosting package
  • Click «Restore» in the sidebar of the package page

At the bottom of the page you will find the link «Restore log». It shows all your previous restores and their status.

Step 1: Choose a backup

You see the backups of the current week with date, time and content. Use «earlier week» to go back up to 60 days. With «Show» you can limit the list to website, databases or mailboxes. Click «Select» next to the backup you want.

Step 1: list of this week's backups

Step 2: Choose what to restore

Tick everything that should be restored. At the top right you see «State of» with the date of the selected backup. For mailboxes, please note: messages received after this date will be lost.

Step 3: Confirm and start

The Backup Manager warns you that your current data will be overwritten and that your site will be briefly unavailable during the restore. Tick «Yes, I understand that my current data will be overwritten» and click «Start restore».

Steps 2 and 3: choose the contents, confirm the warning and start the restore

You can then close the window. Depending on the amount of data, the restore takes a few minutes to several hours. As soon as it is complete, you receive an e-mail at the address of your client account. You can follow the progress at any time in the «Restore log».

The restore log

The log lists every restore with time, content, selected state and status:

  • Requested: the restore is scheduled
  • Running: the data is being restored right now
  • Completed: the restore has finished
  • Failed: nothing was changed, your data is untouched. In this case, open a ticket and we will look into it.

Good to know

  • A restore overwrites the current state. All changes since the selected date are lost and cannot be undone. Check the date carefully.
  • Only one restore runs per hosting package at a time. Wait until it is complete before you start the next one.
  • If a domain, a database or a mailbox has been deleted in the meantime, create it again in your hosting control panel first. Only then can the data be restored. The Backup Manager will point this out to you.
  • Backups you created yourself in your hosting control panel are independent of this. See the article Plesk Backup Manager.

Frequently asked questions

  • I cannot see «Restore». It only appears once backups exist for your package. For a new package this takes until the first nightly backup. If it is still missing after that, open a ticket.
  • How far back can I go? Up to 60 days. We keep up to 60 daily backups.
  • Can I restore individual files only? No, the website is always reset as a whole to the selected state. If you only need individual files or folders, open a ticket.
  • What does it cost? Nothing. The Backup Manager is included in every hosting package, there is nothing to activate.
  • I am not sure which state is the right one. Simply open a ticket. We will look at it together.
