Only traffic to your own server goes through the VPN. Browsing, email and everything else runs directly over your internet connection as usual.

After ordering, the configuration is ready in the customer portal: as a file for Windows, macOS and Linux or as a QR code for iPhone and Android.
Why VPN access for your server?
Every server with open SSH or RDP access is probed by automated attacks around the clock. Passwords are guessed and known vulnerabilities are tested. With VPN access you close these doors to the whole internet and open them only for yourself.
How it works: you install the free WireGuard app on your device and import the configuration from the customer portal. Once connected, you reach your server through our VPN server in Switzerland. In your server firewall you allow SSH, RDP and other management access only from the VPN address shown in the customer portal. For everyone else, these services on your server are no longer reachable.
Shared network, separated customers: through our VPN server, each user only reaches the servers their access belongs to. Even another customer who also uses VPN access cannot reach your server through the VPN.
One user, one device: each user gets their own configuration with their own key. A configuration is meant for exactly one device. For more devices or staff, simply order additional users. You can give each user a label in the customer portal, for example Office1 or Laptop.
Managed automatically: VPN access is set up, adjusted and ended together with your server. If you order more users, the new configurations are ready within moments. If your server address changes, the customer portal tells you to download the configuration again.
FAQ
One user is meant for exactly one device. If the same configuration is used on several devices at the same time, the connection keeps dropping. For each additional device, order an additional user. Two users means two configurations.
No. Only traffic to your own server goes through the VPN. Websites, email and all other services keep using your normal internet connection directly.
You need the free WireGuard app, available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone and Android at https://www.wireguard.com/install/. On a computer you import the downloaded file, on a phone you scan the QR code from the customer portal.
The customer portal shows the VPN address your connections arrive from. In your server firewall, allow SSH, RDP and other management access only from this address. First test with the VPN connected that access works before removing the other rules.
For a new root server, choose the VPN access option with the number of users you need when ordering. For an existing server, open your server in the customer portal and add the option via upgrade options.
No. VPN access is an add-on to a root server at FireStorm and gives access to exactly that server.
One user costs CHF 110.00 per year or CHF 10.00 per month. The option is billed together with your server.
