What is a WHOIS Lookup?

WHOIS is a query protocol that provides information about the registration of domains and IP addresses. Every domain on the internet must be registered with a registrar, and the associated data is stored in the WHOIS database.

With our free WHOIS tool, you can find out who owns a domain, when it was registered, when it expires, and which nameservers are being used. For IP addresses, you get information about the associated network, the managing organization, and the responsible abuse contact.

What information does WHOIS provide?

A WHOIS query can provide the following information: Registrar – the company where the domain is registered. Registrant – the person or organization that owns the domain (if not hidden by privacy services). Registration date – when the domain was first registered. Expiry date – when the domain needs to be renewed. Nameservers – the DNS servers responsible for the domain. Status – whether the domain is active, locked, or otherwise restricted.

Privacy and WHOIS

Since the introduction of GDPR, personal data in WHOIS records is often hidden by privacy services (WHOIS Privacy / Proxy). Many registrars offer this service for free to protect the personal data of the domain owner.

WHOIS for IP addresses

In addition to domains, you can also query IP addresses with our tool. You get information about the associated network, the Internet Service Provider (ISP), and the location. This is particularly useful for verifying the origin of network traffic or emails.
